Today Clifton is a suburb of Bristol, but back in the middle of the 19th century it was a community in its own right and organised race meetings in conjunction with Bristol. However, on Wednesday 12th March 1845 the Clifton Amateur Steeplechases were held over a 3 mile course on the Duke of Beaufort’s Estate. The principal event, the Clifton Steeplechase, was won by Mr Bennett’s Amy, although it was hotly contested and had a strong entry. After racing a party took place at the Angel Inn in Clifton. Whilst there are no further records of a similar meeting taking place in the future, Bristol and Clifton races did continue to be held after this date. |
